I highly discourage anyone from listening to the audio book. This unabridged version took 12 CD’s. The direction was very poor. When there is a pause in an audio book I expects some change in scene or time or related to a pause in action. There were long pauses in between what I could only surmise were sentences.
However my rating is related purely to the book itself. This book introduced me to Elizabeth Keckly. This is a woman that I have never heard of before and I found her a remarkable woman. The book takes place during the Lincoln years predominately. We’re introduced to the Lincolns and see this period of history through Elizabeth’s eyes.
The book was good but not great. Despite the protangonists remarkable history she falls flat in this book and that’s unfortunate. The book chapters are named by the dates in which the action takes place which I think was an error. It gives the book more of the feel of a history book rather than an apic tale about some remarkable and real life people.
Thanks to friends in one of my book clubs I’ve found 2 other books about Elizabeth that have been added to my TBR shelf. I encourage you to sek them out as well. If you’re going to read this book get it from the lirbary or wait for it in paperback.
